Bunk beds can bring excitement and drama to a child's room. To make bunks more appealing to kids, Ms. Keenan often includes a ledge to hold books or a reading lamp in every sleeping nook.

A lot of our kids' beds bunk are convertible to two beds that are complete, perfect if you plan to move your children into their own bedrooms at some point. Choose from finishes such as brushed gray, cream white and rich walnut.
Stairs and Ladders
You can choose between ladders or stairs when it comes to bunk beds for children. Ladders are easy to install and are also less expensive. They also provide an easy way to get into the top bunk bed. They are also considered to be safer than staircases, as they have a larger surface for children to step on and a handrail built-in. Ladders usually have grooves in the steps to prevent slips when climbing up and down the bed.
If you prefer the design and appearance of stairs, they could make an elegant addition to your bunk bed. Staircases can also be used in rooms with limited space since they aren't as imposing as ladders. They can be constructed from metal or wood, and they can match a wide range of bedroom styles. Some staircases are even equipped with storage drawers, which are a great way to add more space to the bunk bed.
Another thing to take into consideration when deciding between stairs and a ladder is the age of your child. While it is recommended that no one sleep on the top bunk below the age of 6, older children who are comfortable with vertical climbing might be better off using stairs than a ladder. Also when you're thinking of using your bunk bed as an extra bed for children or adults who have mobility issues, stairs are the preferred option.
A straight staircase on the side of the bunk requires a minimum of 95" of space on each side. If you don't have the space, you could opt for the u-shaped stairs that does not require as much room but allows you to reach the top bunk safely and safely. Some beds allow you to detach the stairs when not being used. This reduces the footprint of the bed, making it more suited to multi-purpose spaces. There are also stairs that connect to the end the bed. This eliminates the need for separate handrails and makes it easier to climb up and to the bottom for children.
Guard Rails
Guard rails let kids climb in and out of their beds independently and give them a sense of freedom and confidence. They must be positioned correctly to ensure that there are no gaps or loosening between guardrails and the bed frame. If you decide to use guard rails, follow the directions of the manufacturer and examine them on a regular basis for any looseness or holes that could lead to the entrapment.
Keep bunk beds away from electrical appliances and other items that could be projectiles while your children are playing or sleeping. Be sure to place bunks away from windows, as they could cause a risk of falling if kids get up on the top of the bed.
You may want to install an evening light on the ladder to light the way up and down in the event that your child gets up at night to use the bathroom, or if they wake up due to the sound of a storm and are forced to leave their bedroom.
Another great security feature for bunk beds is a safety net that can be put up on the top of the bunk to stop children from falling off while they are asleep or playing. This is a great idea for older kids, who are more likely to sleep on the top bunk.
The guardrails must be securely attached to the bunk beds and cannot be removed without tools. The guardrail openings above the mattress base must not be larger than 3.5 inches wide to prevent strangulation or entrapment. Place the wedge block shown in Figure 1 in each opening of the uppermost guardrail member and over the mattress foundation. Apply an amount of 33 lbf (147 N) in a direction perpendicular the plane of the largest edge of the block for a minute.
It is also recommended to teach children not to hang things on the guardrails or ladder for example, such as clothing, belts and sports equipment; instead a clothes rack should be used to ensure that the objects aren't a strangulation risk for your child(ren). Be sure that not more than one child sleeps on the top bunk. This can lead to a dangerous imbalance and falls.
Mattresses
When choosing a mattress for bunk beds, think about the size of your child and their age. A bunk mattress will last for at least eight years or until siblings no longer share a bedroom and you'll need to pick one that's designed to expand with your child and still provide sufficient support as they grow older.
There are affordable bunk beds for kids of options for bunk mattress sizes. They are usually twin or full size. If your child is suffering from allergies or asthma choose an hypoallergenic mattress with a dust-mite barrier and moisture-wicking cover. Kids are likely to experience lots of spills and accidents, so a mattress that has an antimicrobial layer will help protect the foam from harmful bacteria and germs.
The feel of your mattress is crucial. Kids generally weigh less than adults, so they need mattresses that feel firm but also comfortable. A lot of hybrid and latex mattresses come with an extra firm side as well as a soft side that can accommodate both children's requirements.
Memory foam mattresses be a great choice for children however they're not our first recommendation as they can retain heat and could be too difficult on spines of young children. Think about a hybrid or latex mattress, which provides strong support and cooling infusions for your child or guests to sleep comfortably.
Low-profile mattresses are typically the best choice for bunk beds for children. These mattresses are designed to be less bulky than standard mattresses, and increase the safety rail height of the top bunk. They eliminate "filler" material to offer premium quality with slim lines.
If your child is looking to try a mattress that's thicker than a regular mattress, think about an hybrid or innerspring model with comfort layers on the top that can be removed or replaced as the child develops. These models will give you a good idea of how the mattress will perform as your child grows and you can always add the mattress pad or bed skirt to keep it from sliding off the frame. Some mattresses have side rails or a lip built-in to prevent this.
Stores

The stacking bunks provide an ideal playground for children as kids can transform the spaces below into hidden hideaways or cosy play areas. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked 6 bunks in this room for the ultimate play space for kids that can be used for sleeping, playing and even superhero cape twirls. The room has the bubble wallcovering of Chasing Paper and a ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Blue Jean to create the ultimate escape.
If you aren't able to build an stairwell for your bunk bed that is stacked with kids the ladder could be an easy solution. They are constructed with a single socket Flange, Single Socket, and 90 Degree Side Outlet Fittings. They can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between ladder rungs. The ladder rungs can also be positioned in a straight line with the ground rather than higher to aid in climbing.
Loft beds that can be lowered to just above the ground is another method to maximize the space of the bunk bedroom. This lets you slide desks, dressers and toy chests right beneath the beds. This is a real way to maximize space and can be a great option for smaller bedrooms or in a big family home where the beds need to be able to accommodate many sleepers.
